The Distinguished Alumni Award was established by the Southeastern Community College Alumni Association to recognize and honor an alumna/us of SCC or its predecessor colleges, Burlington Junior College, Burlington Community College, and Keokuk Community College, who has achieved substantial public recognition for their accomplishments or success.
Distinguished Alumni Scholarships
Every year the SCCAA awards Distinguished Alumni Scholarships worth $1,000 each to graduating SCC students who are transferring to continue their education after SCC.
Distinguished Alumni are honored annually for their outstanding contributions to their communities and professions. Nominations are due annually August 1.

2017 Distinguished Alumni
Mary Ann Philp, Class of 1980, SCC 2017 Distinguished Alumna - Keokuk Campus
Mary Ann Philp graduated from Southeastern Community College with an Associate's Degree in Nursing in 1980. She was employed by SCC as a clinical instructor in Pediatrics in the fall of 1981 and continued in this position while completing her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. She became a member of the SCC full-time faculty in 1989 and then Nursing Coordinator for the Keokuk Campus in 2001. Mary Ann retired from SCC in August of 2011. She continued to serve as a clinical adjunct following retirement.
While working, Mary Ann most enjoyed the area of Pediatrics nursing. She was also involved with teaching preschool Sunday School classes in her church, was active in the Central Lee Schools PTO and Music Boosters, and now volunteers at Central Lee Elementary.
Mary Ann thanks her Keokuk SCC Nursing faculty colleagues for their constant support and their willingness to work as a team in the best interests of the students.
Mary Ann was celebrated at a 5 pm reception held in her honor on Wednesday, May 10 prior to graduation. At 7 pm that evening, she presented the graduating class with a keynote speech.
Dr. Andrew R. Kious, Class of 1975, SCC 2017 Distinguished Alumnus - West Burlington Campus
Andrew Kious, formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa, is the son of Patricia Schoroder Kious and the late Cecil Kious. Dr. Kious is a 1973 graduate of Aquinas High School, a 1975 graduate of Southeastern Community College and a 1982 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Kious served as a dentist in the United States Air Force, serving at six duty assignments, including four years at Ramistein, Germany and later a one year unaccompanied tour at Osan, Korea. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal Two Oak Leaf Clusters and retired after twenty four years of service at the rank of Colonel.
Upon his retirement from the USA, Dr. Kious accepted a position in the Restorative Sciences Department at the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University where he currently practices as Associate Professor and director for the Freshman Operative Dentistry course. He provides extensive one-on-one instruction with dental students in the clinical setting. As the Operative Dentistry Section Director he provides clinical and professional development guidance for other faculty members. His personal faculty practice is primarily focused on the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a problem that often leads to stroke and heart attack. Dr. Kious has provided leadership on several committees including Student Admissions, Curriculum, Infection Control and Safety, as well as Accreditation. He has authored several scientific articles that have been published in professional journals and was recognized in 2011 with the prestigious Excellence in Education Award from the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Dr. Kious is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. He is also a charter member of the Georgia Health Sciences University Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. His professional memberships include the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of General Dentistry.
Dr. Kious is a tireless educator and clinician who gives significant credit to Southeastern Community College for serving as a springboard to his higher education, professional achievements and opportunities to serve.
Currently Dr. Kious makes him home in Augusta, Georgia. He and his wife, Susan, have one daughter who resides in Atlanta.
